i went to SE's press con after exam today, had a chance to test out their machines for 06Q3. that's right. all prototypes, very buggy, esp the slider "lock key?" message. the animation is not 100% finished either. first thing i noticed that none of the phones were smartphones, and all of the ring volumes were slashed (even lower than w900i) the w850i is SE's first slider outside japan. the semi-auto slideup feels as study as samsung. the d-pad is quite hard to press. the rest of the buttons are fine. 2MP camera but the AF is scrapped. teh walkman 2.0 interface looks like a toshiba gigabeat, which is better than the old one. the flashy lights look more like keitai-kaizou, ie. not as classy as v80 z710i nad k710i, the 2 phones with huge monochrome external screen, water flash proved. glad to have the 176x220 screen. apart from that, there's really nothng much to sell. style? design? i dont find that too attractive either z550i (Se123) i think it looks quite ugly to be honest. the build quality is good, but i hate all these new flips, they feel too much like toys. (it's a very very mainland chinese Leung design eeew)
i am really worried with SE to say the least. these phones are announced way too early--> 3Q release. the profile will be mid-low galore by september, this might increase the market share, or even drive the revenues up and shut the shareholders' mouth. but in terms of branding, they have completely failed the image of sony. the only representitive phone this season will be the k800i, which i personally think is a true masterpiece. the p990i is still stuck between vodafone h3g for testing.
when nokia has the whole E serires coming up, the new N series with 3MP cameras and all s60 handsets now with much much much improved responseiveness and ringtones, 2.4" qvga screen in candybars, ~20mm thinness, there arent much out there in the market that beats this. i don't see much reason to go for a SE anymore. the M series? we can get the moto Q, the blackberry and the nokia E.
I used to hate nokia, i despise the company for keeping themselves with trashy tech and rip consumers off 2 yo technology, but now they have caught up extremely fast (may be i have been to critical against them in the past and they have taken those critiques seriously, which is great, which is how companies improve)
motorola is going down the drain, they can't survive with just the Q. samsung is still playing with sliders, counting on HSDPA and 3G takeover from LG LG is struggling with the supplying chocolate phones and the 5MP KG920 phone. i think the winner this year is nokia.
