My SHARP SX833 (sharp903 hkg version) review up on

September 2004, Vodafone KK announced 10 new machines to strike back the dominance of NTT, AU KDDI and Hutchison. Out of all that, only Sharp managed to reach up to the high-end 900 series. Ever since the launch of Sharp 902 (and Sony-Ericsson V802), Vodafone is becoming a bigger and bigger threat to Hutchison. In July 2005, Vodafone deliberately announced the Sharp 903 to contrast with Hutchison's "low tech" flag-ship LG 8380. Just the sound of a 3.2MP CCD camera brought about both sensations and cynical speculations. The first hint of commercially available sharp 903 outside Japan appeared in mid August via Vodafone UK just shortly after its Japanese release (Aug 12), sample pictures never ceased to impress: thanks to the 1/2.5" CCD and the re-designed optics.

Sharp has long been a market leader in camera phones. The world's first camera phone, the J-SH04 was introduced by Sharp back in 2000. In less than three years, Sharp pushed the standards up to one megapixel, with their J-SH53 (base model for GX30 in March 2004). Although Sharp lost to Casio in the chase for 2 and 3 megapixel phones, the company managed to bring out the world’s first phone with optical zoom, the V602SH (Sharp 902 base model). Samsung reached 8 megapixels in Korea by, technically speaking, incorporating a phone module into their V-series digital cameras. By numbers, Sharp may seem to lack behind. But in the UMTS world, the sharp 903 marked yet another breakthrough.

The Sharp 903 is exclusively sold by Vodafone in Europe and Japan. SmarTone-Vodafone, the second largest mobile operator in Hong Kong after Hutchison, managed to secure another exclusive deal with Sharp to re-brand 903 to SX833...
